Infection Control & Patient Safety
Tyco Healthcare has long been identified with the safety of the patient through the application of single-use medical devices. Now Tyco Healthcare is also supporting the safety of healthcare workers, particularly in the areas of Vascular Access, preventing the transfer of blood-born pathogens through needle stick or sharps injuries, surgical smoke evacuation, blunt suture needles and single-use laparoscopic devices.

MAGELLAN* Safety Needle
This safety needle has been designed in response to this problem. The device consists of a hypodermic needle with an integral safety shield that securely and permanently locks over the needle after use. With one-handed technique, the shield is easily locked using the thumb, finger, or flat surface. This safety needle requires minimal training. There is no need for any changes in hospital care standards, patient care procedures and handling compared to conventional standard products.

Blunt Suture Needles
We make every effort to ensure the safe and appropriate use of our sutures. In order to reduce needle stick injury during use and handling we have foam in the packaging, protecting the needle point. We promote the use of Blunt Needles, preventing accidental injury during closure of a midline incision. The graphics on the packaging is up to 30% larger, ensuring the correct suture selection from the suture rack.

Disposable Laparoscopic Devices
Virtually all our range of laparoscopic products are for single patient use.
Single use surgical products provide a number of significant safety benefits: No disassembly reassembly errors, instruments are never worn or damaged, edges are always clean and sharp, no chance of contamination from previous surgical procedures, no concerns about re sterilisation or the potential transmission of infective agents such as New Variant CJD and Hepatitis.
Our latest range of laparoscopic access ports has radically reduced risks and complications associated with "Port sites" in laparoscopic surgery.
